Blue Motion: Getting Students Moving

Blue Motion is a program at Blue Mountain College with the goal of getting students excited about fitness. Rebecca Parker, the director of Blue Motion and the campus Wellness Center says, "Blue Motion is the wellness initiative here at Blue Mountain College that has been generously funded through a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation." Parker explains that the purpose of the initiative is "to change the culture of Blue Mountain College and the surrounding community to one of health and wellness."

The Blue Motion movement is already well under way, undertaking projects such as hosting intramural games and the Blue Mountain College Olympics, and extending the Wellness Center hours. Since the initiative began, the college has also constructed the new fitness trail and started renovating a new facility to host fitness classes, video-led fitness groups, healthy cooking groups, and non-credit wellness classes.

According to Rebecca Parker, the Blue Motion movement will give students more opportunities to "engage in activities that promote wellness." She also says that "being physically active during a person’s college years reduces stress and increases the likelihood of graduating, promotes overall health, and sets the stage for lifelong healthy choices."

Students interviewed gave very positive feedback as well. Jacob Riley, a junior at Blue Mountain College, says "I think the Blue Motion program is great." He supports the movement because "it's a great way to bring students together and encourage physical well-being." The Blue Motion project will bring about healthy change and growth across our student body and the surrounding community of Blue Mountain.

First Corinthians 6:19 says, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? It is important to apply what God's Word says to our daily lives, including taking care of the temple He has given each one of us. Through Blue Motion, we can honor Christ with our bodies as we grow together with BMC.
