Caring for William Carey: Praying for Recovery

Reaching out to our sister university in its time of need

William Carey University was hit hard when a tornado touched down on January 21, 2017 at 4:00 a.m. This violent storm left in its wake three causalities and nearly 500 destroyed homes in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The WCU campus was impacted resulting in almost every building destroyed, but thankfully all students were evacuated without terminal repercussions. All William Carey students have been forced to find temporary housing, only being allowed on campus during scheduled rotations to salvage what they can of their belongings. Currently, the students are still unable to resume classes on campus, but arrangements have been made for them to resume their studies via online courses.

Due to the amount of damage on the WCU campus as well as the surrounding areas, it has been requested that volunteers refrain from visiting the school for the time being.

Although we are unable to aid in the clean-up and rebuilding process at present, there are still ways in which we can reach out to our fellow students at William Carey.

One way that has specifically been requested has been the donation of Walmart gift cards, in which the students may purchase needed school supplies or replace lost personal items. If you are able to donate a Walmart gift card of any amount, the WCU students will be most grateful and blessed for that provision. BSU director Tracy Moser has stated that if any student would like to donate funds via gift card, we need to deliver them to her as soon as possible, for the need is dire.

While many of us are unable to reach out to our William Carey brothers and sisters in a financial manner, there is still something that we can do. We can pray. Each and every member of the WCU team, faculty, staff, and students as well as the Hattiesburg community, need our prayers. God knows each individual need, and He is able to heal every wound and repair the most devastating of disasters. Let us go to our Heavenly Father on behalf of William Carey and Hattiesburg, MS.
