BMC Chorale Tackles the Big Apple

While many BMC students surely had some adventures over the summer, one group in particular was blessed to participate in a once in a lifetime experience. Members of the Blue Mountain Chorale, accompanied by Dr. Long and his wife, traveled to the big city itself, New York. They were given the opportunity to perform in a concert at Carnegie Hall, a concert hall which has seen some of the greatest musicians of every genre from Tchaikovsky to the Beatles. More than that, however, students were able to grow closer together as a group and become a family.

The chorale performed a seven-movement work based on Psalm 100, which says, “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the Earth.” The piece, “Jubilate Deo,” was performed in seven languages — Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Zulu and English. They worked with members of the BMC faculty and staff as well as musicians from Tennessee Tech, who sang with them and shared this wonderful opportunity.

Dr. Long commented on the experience, saying, “We were so pleased and blessed to be a part of this wonderful concert in Carnegie Hall. It was a truly a blessing to have this experience and represent BMC in this special auditorium and concert stage!”

One student reminisced on the time spent in New York, noting not only the worthwhile experience of performing at Carnegie, but also the chance the students had to immerse themselves in the culture of a new place. The chorale was able to visit museums and restaurants, truly exploring and learning about the world outside of our little home here on the Mountain. He states, "It was a wonderful opportunity to glorify God and to represent BMC… Someday maybe I will be able to return to New York, but until then I will have to survive on the memory of the museums, the restaurants, the time well spent with the Longs, and of course wonderful Carnegie Hall!”

We can all be proud of our college and our chorale. Some large congratulations and thanks are in order to the students whose hard work and dedication carried them so far, and to Dr. Long for having the vision and ambition to get them there. As we go into this new fall semester, we look forward to more big things from these amazing individuals.
