The Legend of the Match-Making Fountain

Any student that traverses the campus of Blue Mountain College is well acquainted with the ancient fountain that sits in the center of the grounds. Many a tale has been associated with its white washed form, the predominant one being that after rush -on rush night- if a young woman runs around the fountain barefoot three times, her husband will be the first male she makes eye contact with upon stopping.

Multiple couples have graduated from BMC and soon after wed; however, was it due to the mystical powers of the fountain?

Seeking answers, I questioned a handful of students and faculty to capture their opinion on the wives’ tale.

Freshman and Business major Chloe Jenkins giggled at the idea. “I think it’s true, yes! I know a student from here that ran around the fountain barefoot three times, and the boy she made eye contact with she did actually marry!”

“Well, since I learned about it just a minute ago...” Freshman and Business major Brandon Tackitt struck a somber note. “I think it’s totally real, yeah. I don’t have any evidence to back that up, but I think this is God’s college and miracles are bound to happen.”

Caleb Mitchell, Sophomore and Criminal Justice major, responded with a smile. “I do believe it’s true.” He paused. “If you think it's true. If you truly believe it, then it’ll happen; it’s totally up to faith.”

“No, I don’t think it’s true,” lamented Junior and Exercise Science major Martha James. “I’ve seen it happen, but I think it’s just a coincidence. There’s a good chance you’re going to meet your significant other at college, and the majority of the time it doesn’t include the fountain.”

“Do I think the myth is true? No!” Dr. Bennett, head of the Social Sciences department, chuckled. “Is it like the walls of Jericho, but instead of it falling the 7th time around, you get a husband? Absolutely not.”

The question still remains for readers to decide: are the mystical forces of the fountain fact or fiction?
