The Time Is Near...

Like stories about redemption and revolutions? Like musicals with great scores? Then Les Miserables is the play for you! And the perfect opportunity to see it is coming up soon. The touring show will be at Jackson, Mississippi’s Thalia Mara Hall from Tuesday, March 5, through Sunday, March 10, so it will be a great way to start off your Spring Break!

This musical is adapted from Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name, often lovingly referred to as “The Brick” due to its size (it’s only about 1,500 pages long). Set in 1830s France, the story is centered on Jean Valjean, an ex-convict who breaks his parole and tries to improve his life in the face of society’s stigma, as well as helping others in similar difficult situations. His success is overshadowed by an unresolved crime, however, and a police spy who believes in bringing criminals to justice at any cost. Along the way, Valjean adopts an orphaned girl, who brings as many blessings into his life as she does difficulties.

Later, these characters and many others are caught up in the June Revolution of 1832 in Paris (not “The” French Revolution – no guillotines here). The action comes to a dramatic climax in the battle at the barricade, as heroic sacrifices are made. Eventually, at the end of the play, the remaining misunderstandings are accidentally revealed by a greedy, conniving thief, and all the characters are happily reconciled. (Be prepared for a few tears, though!)

Those are just a few of the most important plot points, but no summary can ever do this story justice. You have to see it for yourself to understand its real power.

Ticket prices begin as low as $40 and go up to $115, but this nearly 3-hour production is well worth the money. The tickets can be purchased at https://www.ticketmaster.com/les-miserables-touring-tickets/artist/34216?venueId=221727.

If you want to start your break off with a little excitement, don’t miss the chance to see this state of the art, awe-inspiring musical!
