Shortly before the new school year began, Blue Mountain Christian University announced that campus would get a new Dean of Students, Brett Butler. If you are unaware, the dean’s office can be found inside the administration building in the room called “Student Services”. You will see his assistant at the front desk. Feel free to ask her if Dean Butler is available if you would like to speak with him for any reason. We have learned a lot about him so far; he has quite a plan for the college.
When asked what main goals for the school year he has, Dean Butler said, “My main goals for this year are two-fold: personal and university/student life.” Dean Butler was asked to elaborate on what he means by personal goals, and he responded with: “I want the student body to see me as an extremely engaged dean who is very interested in cultivating deep, Christian relationships.” He also mentioned that he plans to know “every name and hometown of every face [he sees] on campus, both student and faculty, by Christmas.” As far as Student Life goals are concerned, Dean Butler wants to make sure that “no student is ever alone!”
Why did Dean Butler decide to choose to come to Blue Mountain? His answer: “I was looking for a place where I could serve God boldly and impact the lives of young people.” His prior work experience pertains to Biblical Counseling. He also has over 30 years of administrative experience. This is his first time being a Dean of Students on a college campus.
When asked what he was hoping to learn from BMCU as the dean of students, Dean Butler responded that he hoped he can learn how to effectively unite the diverse body of Christ found at BMCU. Dean Butler believes that “we must provide a family atmosphere because we are family.”
He wants the student body to know that he always tells the truth, even when it is unpopular or uncomfortable. He also strives to always do what he promises. When asked about leaving a mark on students after they graduate, he responded that he wants to be remembered as “a dean who loves God, loves his family, and loves the students - [one that] is serious about caring for their souls.” Dean Butler also hopes that each and every student will see him as a man who loves the gospel. If you have time, stop by and say hello to him.
